Stocksbridge Scouts are based in Stocksbridge (no big surprise there then!). Stocksbridge is about 10 miles north west of Sheffield. Our group are known locally as the Firsts.
We are part of the Sheffield Don District and are known also as the 32nd Sheffield.
We were started in 1912 and so this year is our centenary. We've got a year of thrills, adventure and fun planned with bigger, better and wilder activities planned.
If you'd like to join us either as a beaver, cub or scout please click the join badge on the right.
As part of the Animal Friend activity badge, the beavers paid a trip to the experts at Pets at Home. The knowledgable staff let children touch various animals and told them how to care for small animals.
Every scout in our group will have been presented with a centenary badge, to be worn on their uniform for the next year. The badge design came from ideas by Alfie Atkinson and Harley Swallow, two of our intrepid beaver colony.
They have both been presented with a framed certificate and one of our uber rare centenary neckers.
The Opening Ceremony of our centenary year will be held in Stocksbridge in February. There we will light the ceremonial flame to start the year off.
As part of the Creative Challenge badge, the scouts took part in a fashion show where they made clothing from waste plastic bags. Each patrol had to kit out their PL's and APL's in clothing. Then they had to parade down the catwalk.
As usual the scouts threw themselves into it with gusto.
In 1912 a group of boys in the Stocksbridge area set up their own scout troop. They were busy raising money for their troop when they chanced upon Thomas Brooke Stanley. Brooke Stanley had been a scout in Ellend and took on the role of scoutleader for this fledgling troop.
Their first headquarters were at Langley Brook, in a delapidated hut which they rented for a shilling (5p) a week.
In 1912 the group was registered as the 32nd Sheffield. Today the group is still going strong with over 100 members. We owe alot to Brooke Stanley.
More of the groups history will be placed here, during the year and we also hope to leave a 'living history' of Stocksbridge and scouts during the year.
