St Georges Day
This year Beavers and Cubs took part in an afternoon of activities at Hesley Wood. They were joined by the Scouts during the evening for a renewal of promises and campfire.
The Scouts then proceeded to complete a night hike and sleep overnight (if sleep is the word!)at Chapeltown. This was the first District Night Hike and the trophy was won by our own Hairy Nosed Wombats! Well done to all the scouts who attended, your behaviour and enthusiasm were praised highly by other leaders. Also well done to Gordon getting his first nights away.
Table Top Sale
A table top sale was held to raise money for group funds. Many thanks for the parents for organising this.
Live 07
Live 07 was a huge concert based at the O2
arena in London. Attended by thousands of beavers, cubs and scouts it was a hugly successful event. We were lucky to have two of our cubs who were involved in the actual show. Autographs are available! Below is their reports (which were also published in the Local Scout News Magazine)
'Live 07 was to celebrate 100 years of Scouting. It was down in London at the O2 arena.'
'I got up at 5am really excited. We met at Hesley Wood Scout Camp and set off at 6am. The journey was 4 hours long. We stopped twice, once to pick some other members of the team, the other to go to the toilet.'
'When we got to the arena, we were given passes after we went into the arena to find our dressing rooms. Before lunch we practiced our finale. Then we got into our uniform for the show. The first show was really funwith the parachute we did some sequences I wasn't nervous at all, I thought it was a practice.'
'In the show the explorer scouts were doing the obstacle course with bikes and canoes. Through the show there were Mini Coopers with Be Prepared wrote on them. Also some people were absailing down from the roof. For the finale we marched on and then we sang the National Anthem.'
'We had our tea, we were the last in and only had a little bit of it! After we went to get ready for the second performance. After the performance we went to our coach and sat the the long 4 hour journey home. we got there at 4am on Sunday and my dad was waiting in the car park. I was really tired!'
Bradley Fox
'I was lucky enough to go to London to be part of the celebration of 100 years of Scouting. it was an experience I'll never forget. Even after Baden Powell started scouting thousands of cub scouts and beavers from all over the country joined to celebrate 100 years of fun enjoyment and learning. I was a bit scared at how many people joined in the celebration. Our part was to do a display with a parachute and sing Love Shine a Light, we then made the cub sign by positioning us all on stage to make the sign. it was fun to be part of such a large show. I felt proud to be given a chance to be a part of the celebrations and glad to be a part of the brotherhood of scouts.'

Soap Box Derby
Longley Park - October 2007
The Scouts came fifth in the district Soap Box Derby on a cart built by Ben Armytage and his father Jason. It was our first year in the event and we learned alot from the experience. Roll on next year. Check out the video in our new section - here
Activities Camp / Day
Hesley Wood - October 2007
The Group held its annual Activities Day at Hesley Wood during the first weekend of October. Cubs and Beavers came for the day whilst the scouts camped for the full weekend.
This year climbing, canoeing and an obstacle course were on offer for all the sections. On Saturday we were joined by parents and families for a great campfire held in the circle at Hesley Wood.
Scouts got to stay for the second campfire - yes 2 campfires! as we ran the campfire for all the groups on the site - including the Blue Smartie Jamboree unit. The scouts (14 scouts and 2 young leaders)then were led on a ghost walk where they were entertained with stories of the grisly past of Hesley Wood.
The weather was fantastic - much better than most of the summer! On Sunday we played a few games and visited the Provy before packing up and heading home.
Sunrise 2007
Sheffield August 1st
A Group from the 1st were represented at the sunrise ceremony to celebrate 100 years of scouting.
Scarborough 2007
June 2007
Our annual Scout troop trip took place this year in Scarborough. We had a packed programme, which involved visiting Scarborough Castle, An open top bus ride and a trip on the Hispaniola Pirate Ship!
In the castle the scouts completed part of a trail (part of the Adventure Challenge) and enjoyed a game of Castle Breakout. We then walked to Peasholm Park in the north Bay. We then invested one of our scouts on top of an open-top bus ride to the South Bay.
As part of our centenary celebrations, we renewed our promise, whilst on board the Hispaniola Pirate ship in Scarborough Bay. The scouts were then given time to explore the front whilst completeing a trail.
Many thanks to Beewise travel for providing the minibus at such a good rate.
Canoeing
Oughtibridge June 2007
A great time was had by the Scout Section as we went canoeing down on the River Don at Oughtibridge. This year no-one fell in! Three of our number were invested - standing up in their canoes!
Synergise
Hesley Wood May 2007
We had a cracking weekend at the County Centenary Camp. There were loads of great activities such as Bouncy Castles, Canoeing, climbing, assault courses, shooting, archery, grass sledging, sumo, gladiators, human skittles to do during the day. This was done to the background sounds of Radio Synergise (taking your requests all day - although they didn't play any Genesis!). In the evening were campfires and disco's.
The 3 day event was fantastic. Our troop entered the spirit of the weekend by making new friends, collecting High 5's and hugs from most of the contingent. At the campfire we eventually got a mexican wave going.
A great time was had by all. The only complaint seemed to be, why can't we stay longer.
Beckford Peg
Hesley Wood April 2007
We entered three teams in this years Beckford Peg. Black Tam (Tamara Clarke, ) came 2nd, The Hairy Nosed Wombats (Kathryn Webb) came 7th and the Rebels (Michael Quinn) came 9th.
Group Camp
Silverwood Scout Site
This event took place at the beginning of July. 19 cubs and 18 scouts converged on Silverwood Camp site to follow two seperate programmes, meeting up for supper each night.
It was sunny and oh so hot all weekend. On Saturday the cubs all passed the athletes badge, whilst the scouts had wide games and built bivvys. It was the weekend of the World Cup Quarter Finals and everyone had the chance (thanks to Keith) to watch the match. The result wasn't as we hoped, but we didn't let that get us down. (well when you've supported England and Wednesday for so long, you're used to disappointment!)
On the Saturday evening we all met up once again for a group campfire. This was followed by supper and when the cubs left, the scouts went for a midnight walk bsfore toasting marshmallows on the fire (many thanks to Craig for supplying them).
The Sunday saw the Scouts competing in a water It's a Knockout and the cubs finishing their athletes badge. All too soon it was time to go home but not before a huge scout water fight!
Activities Camp - 2006
Hesley Wood Scout Camp
It was half way through October when we held our annual activities weekend at Hesley Wood. The Scouts (brave souls) camped all weekend whilst the Cubs and Beavers came out on the Saturday for a day packed with adventure.
Putting the tents up in the dark was a totally new experience for most of the scouts, but thats what we had to do as by 6.30pm on a Friday it was dark!
Saturday was the chance for every scout along with the cubs and beavers to take part in activities as diverse as Climbing, obstacle courses, zip wires, football and wide games.
After tea all sections and parents enjoyed a camp-fire before the cubs, beavers and parents left. The scouts were led on a ghost walk around Hesley Wood.
Luckily the weekend was warm and with no rain, it turned into an ideal weekend.
